Welcome to my website, Teaching in a “Post-Truth” World. Eventually, I hope this site will become a resource for teachers of English and other subjects who care about mis- and disinformation, critical media literacy, and epistemology. Currently, it features my ongoing dissertation research, an IRB-approved case study exploring the integration of critical media literacy and epistemology in English language arts. I created this website for EDCI 616, a class at Purdue University on qualitative data analysis, as a culminating project. Our task was to present the results of the data analysis work we’d done in class in a creative and interactive way. I thought it would be appropriate to present my work as a website since my research topic is inseparable from digital media in general and the internet in particular. Although the website represents the culmination of my learning in the class, I hope it’s only the beginning of what will become a larger, public-facing project.

I invite you to begin your exploration with the “About (Context)” page, where you can read a short or long explanation of the background and context of my research. Then check out “Examples of Data Analysis,” where you can read analyses of interviews I conducted with three of my teacher participant-researchers. Each analysis features a different approach–one traditional (analytic memos with some deductive coding) and two non-traditional (poetic analysis and affective analysis). Next, take a look at the “Potential Issues” section, where I dive into some of the methodological and ethical issues associated with this type of study and explain what I’m doing to mitigate them. From there, navigate to the “Researcher Role” page. This is where I get personal, describing the complicated relationship I have with my research topic and contexts. Finally, check out the “Themes and Results” page, where I have begun to document some of the preliminary findings of this research. Welcome to Teaching in a “Post-Truth” World, a resource for teachers of English and other subjects who care about mis- and disinformation, critical media literacy, and epistemology. I’m a Ph.D. candidate at Purdue University, where I am researching how teachers integrate critical media literacy and epistemology into their curriculum. Currently, this website features my ongoing dissertation research. A National Board Certified Teacher, I taught high school English for 18 years before beginning my doctoral work.
